Wolfberg, Boca Raton’s St. Andrews Among Florida State H.S. Tennis Standouts; Full Results
Florida high school tennis teams and individuals took home honors at the end of April when the Florida High School Tennis State Championships were held in Class 4A-1A at Sanlando Park, Red Bug Lake Park and Sylvan Lake Park in the Orlando area.
Among the highlights were the Douglas High School (Parkland, Fla.) and Belen Jesuit (Miami) boys’ teams winning their first-ever state championships, and state heavyweights Dr. Krop (Miami), St. Andrews (Boca Raton) and American Heritage (Delray) returning to the champion’s stage.
St. Andrews (Boca Raton) was the lone school to defend a team state championship from last year.
Alana Wolfberg, a sophomore at Timber Creek High School in Orlando, successfully defended her 4A girls’ singles championship, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win in the final.
“It gets better every time,” Wolfberg told the Orlando Sentinel after finishing-up in the 90-degree heat. “I played efficient points because it was so hot out there. I used my serve to set up my game.”
Wolfberg was one of five players to sweep the individual singles and doubles titles in their class, joined by Antoine Sanchez (Riverview, Sarasota, Class 4A), Ysabel Gonzalez Rico (Gulliver Prep., Pinecrest, Class 2A), David Lins (Pine Crest, Ft. Lauderdale, Class 2A), and Samantha DiMaio (Trinity Prep., Winter Park, Class 1A).
