The USTA Florida Section is pleased to announce a schedule of Sectional tennis events through June 2021, that includes the conclusion of the 2020 Adult League season and the start of the 2021 season. All events scheduled thus far will be held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., and will be reliant on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic at the time of each event.
To wrap up the 2020 Florida Adult League season, Sectional Championships for the Mixed 18 & Over, Mixed 55 & Over, Combo 50 & Over and Combo 18 & Over divisions will be held in early 2021. The 2021 season of Florida’s Adult League Sectional Championships is slated to begin in April with play format modifications that are still being assessed.
“We’re hoping to resume a more normal cadence to our Sectional processes after March,” said Christine Ducey, Adult Tennis Director for USTA Florida. “We are still evaluating the best way to approach events and keep players as safe as possible in the continued presence of COVID-19, but we are planning to host all of our 2021 Sectional Championships in 2021.”
For competitive junior players, USTA Florida has been diligently planning for the organization’s storied junior tournaments, the 2021 Bobby Curtis Singles and Doubles Sectional Championships as well as the 2021 Bobby Curtis Green Ball Sectional Championship. While these events are anticipated to be held as scheduled at this time, USTA Florida continues to gauge what these larger-scale tournaments will look like in the COVID-19 environment.
“We have our anticipated dates, but at this point, it is too early to determine if we could run our Sectional Championships in 2021,” said Jason Gilbert, Director of Youth Tennis for USTA Florida. “Our team will continue the planning process throughout the beginning of 2021 to determine if it will be safe to run these events, as our most important priority is the safety of our players.”
