Former Florida State University star and ATP player Jonathas Sucupira won the title at the $2,000 Tampa Bay One-On-One Doubles Shootout on March 31, 2018, in the final defeating high school senior and USTA No. 3-ranked junior Ryan Goetz 10-7 at the FishHawk Ranch Tennis Club in Lithia, Fla.
The field featured 31 players ranging from juniors to former pros.
“Our club members and guests were treated to some excellent, high-level serve-and-volley tennis, and to world-class live rocking blues,” said Dave Freiman, tennis director at FishHawk Ranch Tennis Club. “This event is growing with more sponsors, spectators and players. We look forward to our 3rd annual event next year.”
Sucupira in the semifinals defeated Jordan Parker 10-9, and Goetz topped former N.C. State player Ben Zink 10-9 in the 10-point tiebreak format.
“This event was a ton of fun,” said USTA Florida Player Development Coordinator Andy Gladstone. “You only see this type of serve-and-volley tennis at these One-On-One Doubles tournaments. The atmosphere was electric.”
One-On-One Doubles is the half-court, serve and volley singles game played crosscourt-only with the alley included. Tournaments enforce its serve-and-volley rule, on both serves, or there is a loss of point. Half-volleys are permitted, and the returner can stay back or come in.
The next stop on the One-On-One Doubles tour is the Winter Haven One-On-One Doubles Shootout featuring Grand Slam legends Emilio Sanchez, Luke Jensen, Mel Purcell and Fritz Buehning on Saturday, April 28 at the Country Club of Winter Haven. The event will be nationally televised on Fox Sports Florida, NESN and Tuff TV Networks.
