Three first-time winners in 2015 were crowned and some nail-biting finishes marked the USTA Florida Mixed 40 & Over League Sectional Championships, held May 15-17 at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach.
A team from Volusia/Flagler counties (Debary Golf & Country Club, Debary) won the Mixed 40 & Over 6.0 Level by edging Clay County (Eagle Harbor Country Club, Fleming Island) 2-1 in a meeting that saw all three doubles matches in the final determined by third-set super-tiebreakers.
At the Mixed 9.0 level Pinellas County successfully defended its championship from last year, and jumps into a tie with Duval County for the most USTA Florida League state titles in 2015 (see standing chart below). All four level finals over the weekend were determined by a 2-1 score. All four teams now advance to represent the USTA Florida Section at the USTA League Mixed 40 & Over National Championships in Surprise, Ariz.
The USTA Florida Mixed 40 & Over League Sectional Championships included local league champions from (in alphabetical order) Alachua, Brevard, Broward, Collier, Duval, Escambia, Hillsborough, Indian River/Martin/St. Lucie, Lee/Charlotte, Leon, Marion, Miami-Dade (South), Okaloosa/Walton/Bay, Orange/Seminole, Palm Beach (North), Palm Beach (South), Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota/Manatee, and Volusia/Flagler counties.
Teams consisting of three doubles lines competed in a non-elimination round-robin format on Friday and Saturday. The winner of each flight/level in round robin play was determined by team matches won, and the winner of each flight advanced into a single-elimination semifinal followed by the final on Sunday.
