Rain Can’t Dampen USTA Florida Diversity Tennis Camp at USTA National Campus
Some of the top tennis coaches in the state held court at the top tennis facility in the country when the USTA National Campus hosted the latest USTA Florida Development Camp for Diverse Backgrounds at the end of September in the Lake Nona region of Orlando.
The one-day camps provide a one-of-a-kind experience for junior competitive players ages 12-18 who want to improve as tennis players while also learning about college scholarship opportunities, tournament and additional support opportunities, and the latest physical training techniques.
“My son enjoyed the positive, enthusiastic coaches and the atmosphere,” said parent Gene Tavares. “Really a great environment created for all the kids at the camp.”
The impressive alumni list over the years from USTA Florida diversity camps includes Sloane Stephens, who won the US Open title during the month prior to the camp, and Sachia Vickery who won a $60,000 USTA Pro Circuit title in the weeks following this year’s camp.

Coaches for the camp included director Scott Williams, Pedro Estrada, Dave Porter, Josh Molino, Kelvin Rivera, Marc Atkinson, Raleigh Grossbaum, Fabrice Myrtil, Devin Reddick, Waylon Chin, and USTA Florida Director of Competitive Tennis Jason Gilbert.
“It was a ‘perfect storm,’ no pun intended, of good things, even with 80 percent chance of rain predicted as of Friday night,” said USTA Florida Player Development Coordinator Andy Gladstone of the Saturday event. “Director Scott Williams works magic with the coaches, parents and kids. There was also great support from the campus and all the coaches.”
The next USTA Florida diversity camp will be held on Nov. 11, 2017, at the Barbara Manzo Tennis Center at Three Oaks Park in Ft. Myers, Fla. For more information go to www.ustaflorida.com/event/development-camp-for-players-diverse-backgrounds-three-oaks-tennis-center/.
