Korda, Snells Win Doubles at USTA International Spring Chps. Tennis

Ft. Lauderdale’s Jamilah Snells and Californian Maxi Duncan, doubles winners at the USTA Girls’ 14s National Championships last year

Bradenton’s Sebastian Korda and Ft. Lauderdale’s Jamilah Snells were doubles title winners last weekend at the USTA International Spring Championships in Carson, Calif.

Korda won the boys’ 18s crown with Colombian Nicolas Mejia. The No. 4 seeds defeating unseeded Boris Kozlov (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and Karl Poling (New York) 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-2 in the final.

Korda and Mejia won their final three matches of the tournament in super-tiebreaks.

“We always shine in third-set breakers,” Korda told zootennis.com. “We have unbelievable chemistry, we’re best friends off court and we play well together.”

Mejia trains at the IMG Academy in Bradneton.

Top seeds Carson Branstine and Ellie Douglas won the girls’ 18s title, in the final defeating No. 5 seeds Emiliana Arango of Colombia and Elli Mandlik (Boynton Beach, Fla.) 6-1, 6-1.

Ft. Lauderdale’s Snells and Maxi Duncan of California won the girls’ 16s doubles title, as the No. 8 seeds in the final defeated No. 5 seeds Britt Pursell and Rachel Wagner 2-6, 6-1, 12-10. In the quarterfinals the No. 8 seeds upset No. 4 seeds Jenna De Falco and Gianna Pielet 10-5 in a super-breaker.

Snells and Duncan last year were Gold Ball winners at the USTA Girls’ 14s National Championships in Peachtree City, Ga.
