U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk will headline this year’s Current/Sherman Group of Merrill Lynch Champions for Children Gala which benefits the MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation in Jacksonville, Fla.
Furyk is one of the PGA Tour’s most recognizable golfers, and won at least one tournament each year between 1998 and 2003. In 2010 he won a career-best three tournaments, including the season-ending PGA Tour Championship.
He is the co-founder of The Jim and Tabitha Furyk Foundation, established in 2010 to help families and children in need. Based in Jacksonville, the nonprofit charity is involved in many projects across North Florida, including the MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation.
This year’s Gala will take place on Thursday, Oct. 4 at the Florida Blue Conference Center in Jacksonville. The evening will include a cocktail reception, silent and live auctions, dinner, scholarship award presentations to MWYF students, remarks by Furyk and more. The gala is the largest fundraiser of MWYF and has traditionally raised approximately $250,000. Event tickets are available at www.malwashington.com/gala and are expected to sell out.
The MWYF promotes academic achievement and uses tennis to engage students in an active and fun youth development program. The flagship program, TnT (Tennis-n-Tutoring), is a comprehensive after-school program which includes daily homework assistance, life skills classes, and tennis lessons to Jacksonville’s underserved youth. The mission of the MaliVai Washington Youth Foundation is to develop champions in classrooms, on tennis courts, and throughout communities.
