Florida Tennis Jr. Black Wins ITF Grade 1 International Spring Championships
Top seed Hurricane Tyra Black beat fellow American and wild card Connie Ma 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 for the ITF Grade 1 International Spring Championships title on Sunday in Carson, Calif.
For the Boca Raton 18 year old it was a second straight ITF Grade 1 International Spring Championships title after trailing 2-4 in the final set before ripping off four straight games to beat the 15-year-old Californian Ma.
In the third set Black started cramping, and said she vomited following the match.
“I hit one serve and started cramping in my leg, I started cramping more and more everywhere, then it went to my arm, my calf, my other leg,” said Black, speaking to zootennis.com. “I honestly didn’t think I could do it, after all the stuff that was going on, I was freaking out a lot.”
As the final set played out, Ma’s errors mounted while Black ramped-up her aggressiveness, ending the match with a volley winner.
Last year’s title was also a comeback effort from Black, who defeated Georgia Drummy of Ireland 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-1. She joins a list of past champions of the event that include Sloane Stephens (2009) and Melanie Oudin (2008), and past participants-turned-pro Madison Keys, Christina McHale, Vania King, Nicole Gibbs, CoCo Vandeweghe, Lauren Davis and Taylor Townsend.
