Tennis On Campus

It’s not often that the University of Florida beats Big Ten heavyweights Ohio State and Wisconsin AND wins a Florida ‘Tennis on Campus’ club tennis title, but that was the scenario last weekend, Jan. 23-24, 2016 at the Ibis Open hosted by the University of Miami, which featured a number of out-of-state college club tennis teams challenging Florida schools.

In the Gold Bracket final, the UF-“A” team defeated the University of Central Florida-“A” squad 30-17 for its fourth Florida club tennis circuit title of the 2015-16 season in its fourth tournament appearance.

UF was dominant in the final in all divisions, winning the men’s singles 6-3, women’s singles 6-3, men’s doubles 6-4, women’s doubles 6-5, and the mixed doubles 6-2. Twenty-eight teams competed at two sites, the University of Miami courts and Crandon Park, home of the ATP/WTA Miami Open.

Other Florida schools competing were Florida Atlantic University, Florida State University, Stetson, University of Miami, University of North Florida, University of South Florida, and the University of Tampa. Out-of-state schools in addition to Ohio State were Dartmouth, the University of Charleston and the University of Wisconsin.

The Silver Bracket final went unfinished due to darkness with the UF-“B” team facing the UF-“C” team, to be completed at a later date, and the UT-“A” team won the Bronze Bracket with a win over FAU-“A” in the final.
