Day 3 USTA Florida Jr. State Chps. Results: Girls’ Seeds Make a Stand; Boys’ 18s Upsets

The girls’ seeds held firm for the most part on Monday, Day 3 at the 68th USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Singles Championships, and unseeded former champs continued to make noise as play advanced into the quarterfinals.

The tournament runs through Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach (18-16s divisions) and at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs (14-12s divisions).

The Girls’ 18s quarterfinalists are all seeded, led by No. 1 Adriana Reami of Miami, and No. 2 Alexandra Belaya of Melbourne. The Girls’ 12s have done one better, successfully advancing all eight seeds to the quarterfinals.

Unseeded Nina Gulbransen of Boca Raton, last year’s Girls’ 14s winner, on Monday upset No. 2 seed Daniela Bellini of Tierra Verde in Girls’ 16s play, and was joined in the quarterfinals by one other unseeded player, Abigail Rencheli of Sarasota.

Unseeded 2015 Boys’ 16s champ Michael Heller of Weston and unseeded Steven Sun of Boca Raton continued shining in the Boys’ 18s division. On Monday Heller easily upset No. 14 seed James Ignatowich of Wellington, and Sun likewise was a quick winner over No. 10 seed Tripp Tuff of Jacksonville Beach. In the Boys’ 18s quarterfinal round the highest remaining seed is No. 7 Richie Torres of Key Biscayne, and half the remaining players are unseeded.
