Day 3 Results: Into the Quarters at the 2018 USTA Florida ‘Bobby Curtis’ Jr. State Tennis Championships
Save for one match uncompleted due to rain, the USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Singles Championships advanced to the quarterfinal round on Monday, Day 3, where the seeded hierarchy was upended in a number of the age 18-12 divisions at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
In both the girls’ 14s and 12s divisions, three of the Top 8 seeds were shown the door by unseeded or lower-seeded players. No. 11 seed Natalie Outcalt (Ponte Vedra Beach) outlasted No. 2 Caroline Nicholls (Aventura) in the biggest upset of the day in the hot and humid 90-degree conditions 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the girls’ 12s. In the girls’ 14s, unseeded Lexington Reed (Orlando) did likewise to No. 3 seed Grace Levelston (Vero Beach) 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
Last year Demi Snyder (Ft. Lauderdale) won the girls’ 16s as an unseeded player. On Monday Snyder, the No. 6 seed in the girls’ 18s, was upset 6-1, 6-1 by unseeded Emma Heiderscheit of Bonita Springs. Last year’s boys’ 16s champion, Logan Zapp of Fleming Island, moved into the boys’ 18s quarterfinals as the No. 5 seed, advancing when his opponent and No. 12 seed Daniel Krulig (Coral Gables) retired with injury trailing 6-3, 4-6, 2-0.
Orlando’s Alana Wolfberg, last year’s girls’ 18s champion going for a third straight “Bobby Curtis” title after winning the 16s in 2016, fought her way into the quarterfinals via a 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-3 victory over No. 13-seeded Sofia Rojas of Sarasota.
The top seeds in the boys’ 12s were undeterred by neither the heat nor the competition on Monday as all eight advanced into the quarterfinals, dropping only one set between them.
