Day 1 Results at the 66th USTA Florida Bobby Curtis Junior State Doubles Tennis Championships

The girls held their own while the boys’ side featured a number of upsets on Day 1 at the 66th USTA Florida Bobby Curtis Junior State Doubles Tennis Championships.

Held Sept. 20-22, 2014, age groups are contested at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs (18s-16s age divisions), and at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach (14s-10s divisions).

Division results differed wildly on Saturday as five of the eight seeds in the Boys’ 18 Doubles division were upset, including the No. 1 seeds. In the Girls’ 18 and Girls’ 16 divisions, only one seeded team lost through the first two rounds of play.

Max and Martin Damm of Bradenton, sons of former US Open doubles winner (2006) Martin Damm, were also upset-makers. The unseeded sons of the former Czech ATP star upset No. 8 seeds Jacob Lowen/Piercarlo Usai 6-3, 6-4 to move into the quarterfinals in the Boy’s 12 Doubles division.

Former Bobby Curtis Doubles champion Harrison Gold (Aventura) and partner David Lins (Boca Raton) also pulled an upset as an unseeded team in the round of 32 of the Boys’ 14 Doubles division, ousting No. 3 seeds Dylan Breslaw/David Burns in an extended third-set breaker 7-6(4), 4-6, 13-11.

Former Bobby Curtis State Doubles winners include former WTA doubles No. 1 and Wimbledon winner Corina Morariu (Girls’ 16s-1992, Girls’ 14s-1991), and current ATP player Wayne Odesnik (Boys’ 14s-1999).

Former world No. 1s Chris Evert, Andy Roddick and Jim Courier are among the players that have raised trophies in singles at the USTA Florida Bobby Curtis Junior State Singles Championships, previously known as the USTA Florida Jr. State Closed. Florida’s top event was renamed to honor the legendary Florida junior tennis organizer Bobby Curtis in 2012. The tournament is annually a launching pad for future college stars and pros.
