Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month: Exe Rahnefeld

Faces of Florida Tennis Community Tennis News Diversity

To commemorate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, USTA Florida proudly acknowledges the contributions of individuals within the AAPI community who tirelessly contribute to the advancement of tennis across all levels.

In celebration of Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month, USTA Florida is proud to spotlight Exe Rahnefeld, a passionate tennis enthusiast whose journey in the sport reflects the spirit of unity and community.

Born in San Isidro, Leyte, Philippines, Exe currently resides in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Her tennis journey began in 1986, inspired after witnessing matches on TV. After the birth of her son, she learned about some local classes through city notices and got involved with the sport.

Since then, tennis has played a significant role in Exe’s life, not only providing ways to meet new people but also contributing to her overall happiness and well-being. Through sport, she has navigated life’s obstacles, taking advantage of the health benefits that the sport gives to those who play.

As a dedicated volunteer in tennis, Exe’s commitment to promoting the sport is evident through her active involvement in organizing social tennis events at the Florida Tennis Center and captaining multiple Volusia County teams. Her love for the game and desire to encourage others to stay active underscore her contributions to the tennis community.

“Exe is key volunteer at the newly renovated 24 court Florida Tennis Center,” one of her peers said. “I met Exe in July of 2023 when I began playing tennis out of Florida Tennis Center. While I have played and worked in the tennis industry for years it is hard to join a new facility, make new tennis friends and find play opportunities. Exe was extremely welcoming to me and my family encouraging us to play in her round robins and join her team.”

Proud of her Filipino heritage, Exe acknowledges its influence in shaping her strong personality and passion for sports. While she may have embraced certain aspects of American culture over time, her roots remain a source of strength and resilience.

In the spirit of unity, Exe’s message was simple, “Try to play tennis.” Through the sports’ inclusivity, she emphasizes that tennis can bring people together across diverse backgrounds and create connections beyond cultural boundaries.

As we honor Asian & Pacific American Heritage Month, Exe Rahnefeld’s story serves as a reminder of the strong diversity within the Florida tennis community.
