Celebrating Women’s History Month: CiCi Bellis

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it is essential to recognize and honor women who have paved the way in sports, inspiring future generations to dream big. Resembling this is CiCi Bellis, a former professional tennis player, now business leader, whose journey has been marked by ambition, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the game. 

From an early age, CiCi was drawn to tennis, captivated by the challenge of an individual sport and the thrill of competition. Encouraged by her mother and other supportive women in her life, she quickly realized that with passion and dedication, she could achieve her dreams. 

Despite her early success, balancing professional competition with school, travel, and personal growth posed challenges. “It was daunting at times,” she said. “I leaned on a supportive network and focused on small improvements in my game rather than letting the big stage overwhelm me.” This ability to maintain perspective and focus on continuous growth became one of her greatest strengths. 

Throughout her career, CiCi found inspiration in legendary figures like Chris Evert, who exemplified mental toughness and relentless work ethic. “Her mentorship taught me the importance of perseverance and self-belief, both on and off the court,” CiCi reflects. These qualities proved invaluable as she went through the highs and lows of professional tennis. 

Beyond her tennis career, CiCi is enthusiastic to give back to the sport that shaped her. “I’m dedicated to sharing my experience and supporting through mentorship programs, where young girls can learn the fundamentals of sports and business,” she explains. 

CiCi is excited by the increasing presence of women in leadership roles within tennis, from coaching to commentary and executive positions. However, she acknowledges that there is still progress to be made. “We still need greater equity in prize money, visibility, and decision-making opportunities for women across all levels of the sport.” 

Female athletes, CiCi believes, play a crucial role in amplifying important messages of determination, inclusion, and perseverance. “By staying active in their communities and engaging with fans, they inspire young leaders to aim high and break down barriers.” 

Her tennis career was filled with memorable moments, including a match where she struggled with her serve but turned things around by shifting her attitude. “Focusing on my next point and refusing to give up helped me power through and come out stronger on the other side.” 

To young female athletes, CiCi offers this advice, “Always remember why you fell in love with your sport and focus on the journey rather than the external pressures. Surround yourself with a supportive circle, and don’t hesitate to seek advice from coaches or peers who’ve faced similar challenges.” 

Reflecting on her career, CiCi is proud of her accomplishments, including playing on the WTA Tour, representing her country, and transitioning into business by starting her own investment firm. “I hope my path shows other women that dedication and courage can open doors both on the court and beyond.” 

One of her proudest moments was winning a U.S. Open match at just 15 years old. “It was surreal, I felt an incredible rush stepping onto such a big stage at such a young age. It also taught me how to handle pressure and expectations, fueling my desire to keep improving.” 

Following her tennis career, CiCi is the now the Founder & General Partner and Cartan Capital, a venture capital firm. She is a leader off the courts and is showing girls of all ages that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to.

As a final message to young women, CiCi encourages them to believe in themselves. “Trust in your abilities, even when the odds seem stacked against you, and never let anyone convince you your goals are too lofty. Consistent hard work and genuine passion can lead you to amazing heights in any sport or industry.” 

CiCi Bellis continues to inspire through her devotion to mentorship, advocacy for women in sports, and her personal journey of resilience and reinvention. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that with commitment and the right support, anything is possible.
