During National Tennis Month, USTA Florida will be spotlighting various facilities or programs that have seen exceptional growth and have had a positive impact on the tennis community in the state.
Tennis growth has been common and constant in the Florida community throughout the past few years. One place that has seen significant growth and is helping make a difference in their community is David Ensignia Tennis Academy.
The academy operates at four different locations across Southwest Miami. Those are Coral Pine Park, Miccosukee Golf & Country Club, Archimedean Academy, and the newly added Continental Tennis Center. This gives them the opportunity to run many different programs and tournaments for all ages and skill levels of tennis.
As of now, there are over 350 active players that are part of the David Ensignia Tennis Academy. Those players represent juniors to adults and cover all skill levels.
Part of their programming includes wheelchair tennis. The academy has weekly wheelchair tennis classes at the Continental Tennis Center that hosts over 5 wheelchair athletes a week. They also hosted the first Roller Classic in Miami and will have another one in October of 2023.
In addition to their adult programming, they recently launched a community program called ‘Silver Tennis’ which offers tennis for adults over the age of 55, that are looking to start the game. This program operates similar to USTA Florida’s ‘Love 2 Learn’ program, where the fundamentals and health benefits of tennis are taught.
Jacit Gonzlez, who is very involved with the David Ensignia Tennis Academy is happy to see the academy continue to positively impact the Miami area. “Tennis is a tool in our communities to attract players of all levels to a new healthy way to live,” she said.
For junior players, they have a plethora of clinics, as well as summer camps for everyone. They work with Early Intervention Behavioral Services (EIBS), which helps children on the Autism Spectrum and related disabilities. These two partners set aside dates in the summer for special needs athletes to come out and enjoy a tennis session.
The David Ensignia Tennis Academy also has nutritional and mental health workshops for their players and those in the community. Another big aspect of their community impact is the Family Days they host throughout the year, to encourage people to try tennis and help returning players meet new people in the tennis community.
