Broward County’s Mike Bennett named USTA Florida Tennis Volunteer of the Month
This month, USTA Florida proudly honors Mike Bennett from Broward County as the Volunteer of the Month. With over 35 years of dedicated service to tennis, Mike’s contributions have profoundly impacted the local tennis community.
Mike’s journey in tennis began when he was just ten years old. Since then, his passion for the sport has only grown, leading him to various roles in the tennis community, where he has tirelessly worked to promote and support the game. His extensive experience and commitment are reflected in his work and the countless lives he has touched through tennis.
In January 2023, Mike was named South Florida Pro of the Month. He is proud to have coached many players including two of his junior players, who received full scholarships to Division 1 schools in the past six months.
In October of last year, Mike directed a Golden Ticket tournament, giving many athletes a chance to compete and come out for a good cause. This event, with all proceeds benefiting the Oakland Park Kiwanis, was a testament to his ability to combine his love for tennis with a commitment to charitable causes.
Mike has also generously taken in and donated multiple racquets, grips, and bags to beginner junior players, ensuring that the next generation has the equipment they need to succeed.
His peers are also thankful for all that he does for their community. “Mike does a lot of community outreach, he volunteers for tennis and helps many underprivileged kids,” one person said. “He engages students as active participants in school and the community and empowers them to acquire and develop knowledge, skills, and talents.”
“I enjoy helping people,” Mike said when asked what he loves most about volunteering. “I get more satisfaction in giving than receiving.” When he isn’t volunteering, he is working at the Dillon Tennis Center or Pompano Tennis Center, where he runs the facilities and is a teaching pro for hundreds of athletes.
As USTA Florida’s May Volunteer of the Month, the organization thanks Mike for his dedication to tennis throughout many different roles. He has been a valuable asset to the South Florida tennis community and has mentored many players of all backgrounds and skill levels.
