Bradenton’s Goldin Wins Tampa Bay One-on-One Doubles Shootout Title
Grayson Goldin from Bradenton, Fla., captured the $2,000 Tampa Bay One-On-One Doubles Shootout on March 24-25, 2017, defeating Argentina’s Facundo Mena 4-1 in the final at FishHawk Ranch Tennis Club in Lithia, Fla. Goldin earned $1,000 for his effort.
The 21-year-old Goldin is currently ranked No. 1761 on the ATP World Tour Rankings. University of South Florida Head Men’s Tennis Coach Ashley Fisher, a former Top 20-ranked ATP doubles player, won the 3rd place match over his current team player Vadym Kalyuzhnyy 4-2.
One-On-One Doubles, called the “Third Game of Tennis,” allows for two matches to compete on one court at the same time. The players are required to play crosscourt with the alley in play. The server must serve and volley on both serves or there is a loss of point. Half volleys are permitted. The returner can come in or stay back.
“With 25 players competing on five clay courts and a rockin’ blues band performing in between the courts, this One-On-One Doubles Shootout tournament was in peak form,” said organizer Ed Krass.
Fans in attendance were treated to a fast-paced round robin, with the winners the first to win three games with no-ad scoring and a nine-point point tiebreaker at 2-2.
“This event was an ace,” said Dave Freiman, tennis director at FishHawk Ranch Tennis Club. “Our FishHawk Ranch students and residents saw some top-level tennis on their home courts. It was a beautiful day to watch some incredible tennis from ATP-level professionals and top collegiate players, all with great live music. Both spectators and players had a great time.”
The next One-On-One Doubles Tournaments will be held in New York. On April 29 the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center will host the USTA National Cat. III One-On-One Doubles Tournament, and on June 2 the Sportime Westchester will host a $2,000 One-On-One Doubles Shootout at Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester, N.Y.
